Aunt Nancy

click photo to enlarge...

Aunt Nancy.

Not my Aunt Nancy.

But, somebody's Aunt Nancy...

...at least that is the name written on the back of each of these photos.

Aunt Nancy at 11 years old, 13 years, 18 years and well...as an adult
(they're not telling).

I found Nancy's pictures in a tattered and torn old photo album retrieved from the free box at the thrift store. Most of the pages were missing as was the cover.
These little portraits were tucked in the back.

I wonder about Nancy and about her life.

This is the closest I could come to some information about Aunt Nancy.

Cousin Nancy by T. S. Eliot
MISS NANCY ELLICOTT
Strode across the hills and broke them,
Rode across the hills and broke them—
The barren New England hills—
Riding to hounds
Over the cow-pasture.

Miss Nancy Ellicott smoked
And danced all the modern dances;
And her aunts were not quite sure how they felt about it,
But they knew that it was modern.

Upon the glazen shelves kept watch
Matthew and Waldo, guardians of the faith,
The army of unalterable law.

OK then,

In other news...

Friday I will be sharing over at Kim Klassen's The Inspiration Studio.
There is always something going on...
...something new to get excited about over there!

I hope you have fun plans for the Labor Day weekend!

Take care,
Laura :)

Mother's Joy

My beautiful Mom as a new mother!
Still just as beautiful today!

Happy Mother's Day!
I hope that your day is full of joy!

Beth of Gypsy Fish Journal is hosting Silver Sunday so I poked around to find a few more silver items...
Above are two beautiful old silver serving spoons from my father's side of the family...

...a set of pretty monogrammed silver forks...

...and this is Gorham's Buttercup pattern.
It was my husband's grandmother's pattern, it is his mother's pattern, his sister's pattern and it is my pattern too ... as that was our wedding gift from my in-laws.
I love it and with four sets in the family we have every size dinner party covered!

Mr. Flea and I both have wonderful mothers who are still so active in their 80's and full of fun.
Click here to see last years Mother's Day post ... the three of us had a ton of fun when we went to the flea market together!

Anyway I wish a Happy Mother's Day to all of you.....

...to those that have children...
... to those that want children, to those who nurture, to those who love.

Have a beautiful Sunday!

To see others participating in Silver Sunday visit Beth's Gypsy Fish Journal ...

Spending Time with Sisters

This week I am looking forward to spending time with my sisters at the lake house....

We all lead such busy lives...I truly cherish this time together...there will be lots of sharing, talking, laughing, planning and dreaming...

(These two teddies belonged to sisters....second cousins of my mother in law....they were given to them by their father when they were young girls... almost 100 years ago....)

I am so grateful to have wonderful sisters to share my life with....

(The copper plaque above was found at the thrift store.....only $1!....maybe we'll get to do a little shopping...thrifting...junking and antiquing this week too!)

Secret in the Old Dogwood Tree

If you have been reading my blog for a while.....you may remember that back on May 1st I did a post titled Grace....It happened to be my daughter's birthday and it included some vintage postcards addressed to a young Grace back in the early 1920's....In any case my photographs revolved around the blossoms of this old dogwood tree......

Being a parent of single young adults ... young love is on my mind.....
.... I admit....I have been fantasizing a bit.....

Combine these romantic musings with childhood recollections of an old tree we used to pass on our drive to my grandparents farm....This special tree had a big hole in the side which had been tarred over and the resident artist of the home it stood in front of, frequently painted varying characters on the flat tarred surface ......Bugs Bunny, Woody the Woodpecker, Mickey Mouse, Tinkerbell....to name a few that I recall.....It was a highlight of our short drive to Nana and Pop's farmhouse and if the tree happened to reveal a new painting.....we would all exclaim with delight as we drove past......

Anyway, this old dogwood in our backyard has a similar hole in it where a branch once grew ... The hole in our tree is not tarred over...in fact the cavity makes a perfect hideaway for some small trinket... or.... perhaps a love note? Hmmm....Is there a secret to unlock? What will we discover? You can see that my imagination has taken a turn....

Perhaps two young lovers....a Romeo and Juliet....could leave secret exchanges here...

Perhaps I have an overactive imagination and am ridiculously silly tonight....perhaps I am a romantic....perhaps you would like to write your own story?
Good night! :)
