An old hymnal ...
...possibly from Mr. Flea's ancestors...
Inside the front cover was this rusty old needle and thread...
...printed in 1793.
...a little doodling...
...or experimental art...
:)
...the back inside pages...
I find this so fascinating and hope you do too!
Because so many of you inquired as to the name of this pretty pink blossom...
...and because I have no idea...
...they just bloom all along the hedge by the side of the house...
...I asked an expert and my friend Carole of Maynard Greenhouse and she told me it is...they just bloom all along the hedge by the side of the house...
Shirobana Spirea.
This variety can display up to three different colors of blooms, varying from white to light pink to a darker, reddish-pink. Often there will be a cluster dedicated to a single color, and the very next cluster will produce flowers of a different color.
A busy day tomorrow...
My nephew Joseph graduates high school...
He is the Salutatorian of his class!
Way to go Joe!
P. S. - Thanks for all the cold summer salad recipes! They all sound so delicious!
We will be busy fixing them and trying them out over the next few weeks!
I hope you try them too!
:)

Love the experimental art doodle Laura! Especially the pirate flag.
Wow! That hymnal is a treasure for sure! I love looking at the old handwriting and wish I had been forced to learn how to write that way! Thanks for letting us have a peek! Thanks for telling us more about the pretty pink spirea..would never have figured that one out!
Love old books of any kind but that one is really sweet! Beautiful pink blooms, thanks for letting us know what it is!
Have a blessed day!
I love the old doodling in the hymnal, that makes it even more special. Congrats to your nephew, your family must be so proud!

The Hymnal takes my breathe away...wonderful find. And to follow with such a gorgeous spirea bloom...mine is not doing so well this year, I think from neglect.
CONGRATULATIONS JOE, THE SALUTATORIAN..AWESOME!

Hey Laura
Love those doodles!! what a treat to find that.. . and a sailboat!! my kind of doodle! ... well lucky for us we have a resident garden expert... clever Carole and such a pretty bloom..
and finally congratulations to Joe!! woo hoo.. xxx Julie
That is an unbelievable family treasure. And to find needle and thread inside is priceless. I found the typing interesting -- why some of the s's are f's ??? It is so amazing to me how some families are able to keep such items from their past -- while others have nothing from their ancestors. You are certainly fortunate in that regard -- on both sides of the famil it seems. Have a great day. :) Tammy
That is the neatest thing! I love finding family treasures. Thanks for sharing!
Laura, that book is a treasure! And the spirea too. One of my faves is the Anthony Waterer Spirea - a gorgeous fuschia (sp?) color! And they dry beautifully! If you think of it before your blooms fade, cut some, hang upside down in a dry place and you'll have them for permanent arrangements!
Again...just love the doodles in the book. And the needle...so curious!
Diane
I just love old books and this hymnal is wonderful! Thanks for sharing!

Be a sweetie,

PS need to make sur I'm following you, you know how it can be, you get so many its hard to keep track...oh and I love the fact that you left the corporate world to become "real" what a concept!
Please pass on my congratulations to Joseph - such a fine young man, Laura. Everyone must be so proud of him, especially your sister Mary Beth!
The hymnal is an absolute treasure! It would really be interesting to see how many of the songs in it are still sung in churches today.
