Summer Begins

I spent the day helping Dad pack up the car,
getting ready for our two day drive north.

Dad is ready to leave the heat of Florida behind
and head up to the cooler mountains in New York.

So many summers...
...so many seasons of summer fun at the lake.
So far, five generations of our family
 have enjoyed their summers here!
...or at least parts of summers...after all, we did and many of us, still work!

We are expecting a lot of family and friends
 to join us this year...

Things will be different without Mom...
...but we have so many wonderful memories to cherish
and will surely have new experiences and good times
to add to that treasured cache.

I have been looking through old black and white photos of summer fun back in the good old days when my great grandparents
and my grandparents used this place as their retreat.
I will have to do a post with all those vintage photos soon.

I have no doubt that it will be a wonderful summer!

Do you see this green glass shaker?
My great grandmother Laura had a pair of them at the lake house when she spent time here in the 1930's,40's and 50's.
They belong to me now and for some reason,
every time I am out flea-ing and I spy another green glass shaker ...
I tend to bring it home with me.
I have been doing that for years.
I have a lot of green glass shakers and jars.
note to self...
I. have. enough.

So, anyway....
What are your plans for the summer?
Do you plan to travel? Stay close to home?
What does your favorite way to spend a summer look like?
:)

  6. What fun to go to a summer house. We don't really have any plans. We take short weekend trips here and there. The economy is going to have to get a bit better before we can take a long trip. Love your green shaker and that rooster.

  11. Hi Laura, We've made that trip up and down the east coast atleast 100 times. 95 from Richmond to Boston is not my favorite part of the trip.
    Hope you have safe travels.
Your summer place sounds devine. Love that it has been used by so many generations of your family.
I live on Cape Cod, so I stay home in the summer. My family is coming from Ohio for a week. Looking forward to the reunion.
I've been following your blog for ages, but never get around to commenting. Love, love, love all your vintage goodies.

  14. HI Laura, what a great post. I loved it. I make notes to myself too...that I have enough quilts, makeup, shutters, furniture with peeling paint...but then I often talk back...rebelliously...and say 'oh no I don't' and then I come home with more. Oh my! Hahahaha...anyhoo...hope your summer is lovely. I'm looking forward to all my college kids coming home, hugging me and kissing me! The rest is icing on the cake!

  16. I'm planning on spending as much time as possible at the lake cottage! I will be alone there most of the time, which will give me time to work on some art projects. Listen to the waves hit the shore, the squirrels rustle in the trees, the horses down the road. Watch the sky reflect into the water, flowers bloom and fields grow as I walk the countryside. Store the memories in my soul when needed. Nothing like days at the lake to help with that!

  18. Your Summer plans sound lovely, Laura. I have one green glass shaker I found years ago at a thrift shop, and at the time had lots of green in my dining room, although my colors changed with this new home, I hung onto my shaker. Yours is wonderful. For Summer I love getting away to the Ocean, walking down the streets to the shops, and dining out with my Husband. We visit family too who live there. Also I plan on having a Pizza and Pool party for friends. Other than that, staying out of the heat!

  23. I collect green shakers and pick them up when I'm Stateside. England looks so beautiful when the sun shines (I hate our long grey winters) so I like to stay home with a few trips to the seaside. Enjoy your summer x

  25. Hello! I'm Stopping in for the first time and had to say that my grandma has a collection of that green glassware in her kitchen too. It instantly says "Grandma" when I see a piece. Love it!
Your symphony and "about me" sections are beautiful. Thanks for the inspiration. I'm off to become a follower . . .

  26. My summer plans include going across the country by car to visit my parents and sisters. We only get to see them once a year which is sad. It's "going home" for my husband and I because we both grew up in the same area. My best summer plans would be finding vintage treasures, reading a lot of books, spending time with my children and growing flowers and drinking a lot of iced tea!

  27. Hi Laura! Oh goodness your summers of going to the lake remind me of On Golden Pond. What a wonderful place to spend your summers especially when things are hot and muggy at home. Love the green shaker. We usually go to Canada to visit my children and Grandchildren but I'm afraid we won't be this year. This year we'll just be working around our little farm enjoying our critters and trying to stay cool. Have a wonderful Time!

  28. I think we collectors have a tendency to amass those things which conjure up special memories from our pasts. Your green shaker is lovely, Laura, and I'm sure it looks even lovelier among all its siblings. ;)
