Great Grandmother's Heart

This old velvet pin cushion belonged to my great grandmother.
My Mom gave it to me along with some other sewing items this week.

I love that it is heart shaped and that the original pink has turned a lovely mauve brown color.
There is just a remnant of silk pink ribbon at the top.
It has old steel pins still embedded here and there.

I remember my great grandmother Laura and my great grandfather Sidney as well.
He used to play the harmonica and dance around the kitchen when we were very little.

I love that I have this treasure that once belonged to my mother's grandmother...
my Nana's mother...the lovely lady who I was named after.

Internet access is spotty up here at the lake...

This afternoon was lovely...
Rain falling tonight...
...cool and comfortable...
...at peace.

Hope all is well!
:)

  3. Hello Laura! Oh how I wish we had your temperatures right now...we're setting records two days in a row here in Kansas at 109 degrees. What a treasure from your Great Grandmother...to think she held this in her hand and used it. Something else that is special is that it means so much to you. I'm sure your Great Grandmother would be pleased. Have a wonderful Wednesday...Maura :)

  5. Laura, this is just the kind of thing that I adore. Passing down little pieces that once belonged to special people in our lives is one of the things that helps keep us connected. I have a biscuit cutter that was used by my grandmother, then one of my aunts, and she has now passed it on to me. I use it each time I make biscuits, and each time I think of both my grandmother and my aunt. How wonderful that these sewing treasures are now in your hands to cherish until you pass them on to another. ~ Sarah

This is precious, and the fact you have it is just wonderful! I wish I had a sewing notion of my grandmother's...she was the one who taught me to sew.

  24. Laura,
You have been gifted with some absolute treasures from you Mom and your MIL lately. This is so beautiful and your pictures, as usual, are stunning.

We are "on the road." We are in Sioux Falls and going to see Jud's mom and Dad in Yankton. The internet is spotty in this Holiday Inn!I have to go sit in on place in the room and then I can get a connection! We will just say a prayer that this gets to you!

    Thanks for the beauty.

    Hugs,
    Suz

  30. What a wonderful, wonderful treasure! Think how many times her hands touched it, and your grandmother's, and then your Mom's, and now yours...what sweetness.

I have my grandmother's sewing basket. Everything in it is really quite ordinary, but I know that my uncle threaded all the needles that are stuck in the underside of the padded lid for Grandma when her eyesight got bad. It turns the ordinary into extra-special somehow.
