Child's Play

Children's belongings of long ago are so appealing to many of us because of their charm, the diminutive size and the nostalgia factor.

My husband's family was much like mine....they cherished and held onto many things and passed them down to their children and grandchildren. My Mom-in-law is an avid collector and appreciates antiques and her family heirlooms . This Chatterbox book was passed down to my husband and is full of wonderful engravings and plates.

This tiny doll (not quite 4 inches) was found while helping to clean out a friend's family home. I sent the little orphan to a gal who repairs dolls and she created a wig and fashioned a wee dress.....doesn't she look sweet?

This second Chatterbox book was found at an antique sale.

It is full of delightful stories and charming engravings and pictures.

Nuggy and Cruggy.......this beloved pair belonged to Rob and his sister Karen when they were children.........a few years ago....

A charming old French lesson book.

More wonderful pictures and text.

This doll dresser belonged to Mary, an elderly cousin in Rob's family......She received it as a child and before she passed away she handed it down....The miniature ironstone set is original (except for the pitcher).

I found this small (about 21 inches tall) doll's cupboard at least 20 years ago and it seemed to match....it certainly was made in the same era as Mary's dresser.....My Mom-in-law loved it too ....she bought it and gave it to me as a Christmas present......I was delighted and still am!

  1. Wow how lucky you are to have such treasures passed down from your families. Your antique children items are adorable and I wouldn't it be great if they made them like that still. I love looking thru old children books and can find myself looking at them for hours.

  4. What lovely things, you're so right there is something very special about old toys, childrens books etc. I love the teddies, they always look like they have their own little characters and the doll where she is gorgeous and looks very old, is she victorian?
You're very lucky to have things passed on to you, lots of people now don't seem so interested.
I saw a tv show yesterday and someone was selling something his grandfather had handed to his father and his father had handed to him, cards he'd sent home from the first world war, I thought this was very sad, all that family history.
    Enjoyed your post. Take care.

  5. It is so nice that both families have appreciated and passed things down the generations. I'm lucky enough to be in the same situation her. I really cherish things which have been in the family for generations. Nuggy and Cruggy are very sweet!
